The Alliance for Lawyers at Risk, alongside the Free Hoda Campaign and human rights organisations including the International Federation for Human Rights and Lawyers for Lawyers condemn the continued repression by Egyptian authorities of lawyer and human rights defender Hoda Abdelmonem. Despite completing her sentence on fabricated charges on October 31, 2023, the Egyptian authorities charged her in a new case with the same charges, and she remains in detention, in violation of judicial rulings and the principle of double jeopardy. Abdelmonem’s prolonged detention and repeated case rotations exemplify systemic repression against human rights defenders in Egypt. We call for her immediate and unconditional release, the dismissal of all charges, and an end to the Egyptian authorities’ repression of human rights defenders.
