Our Approach
The Alliance for Lawyers at Risk is an independent UK-based pro-bono Charitable Incorporated Organisation, initially founded in 2010 as a pro-bono network by the late Sir Henry Brooke, that provides moral and legal support to lawyers and human rights defenders working in precarious circumstances.
In October 2017, the Alliance relaunched its initiative. Six years later, in October 2023, it was registered as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, with the Objects of promoting human rights (as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent United Nations conventions and declarations) and seeking to protect the rule of law for the benefit of the public throughout the world, by all or any of the following means:
- securing the enforcement and proper administration of human rights law, in particular but without limitation, by supporting lawyers and other human rights defenders who are at risk by reason of their work;
- promoting the education and training of lawyers and human rights defenders in all matters relating to the proper administration of human rights law;
- international advocacy of human rights by making representations to governments and others;
- research into human rights issues;
- providing technical advice to governments and others on human rights law;
- commenting on proposed legislation with potential human rights implications; and
- raising awareness of human rights issues and promoting the importance of the rule of law.
